DONE DEAL
Kentucky's basketball program has always been rich in tradition. Now the all-time winningest program is making John Calipari the wealthiest coach college basketball has ever seen. The Cats' Pause has learned Calipari has signed an 8-year contract that will pay him $31.65 million over the life of the deal, a stunning total to lead the storied program back to prominence. Calipari inked the deal just before 9 p.m. and faxed it to his new employer before boarding a chartered jet to Lexington. UK will also pay the University of Memphis $200,000 as part of a buyout stipulation in Calipari's current contract with the school. In a sure sign of the magnitude of Calipari's presence at UK his average annual salary of $3.96 million will exceed that of Florida coach Billy Donovan, who according to a March 2009 story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution made $3.3 million this with the Gators this season. The contract is a departure from the predicament UK found itself in with former coach Billy Gillispie, who never signed an official pact and instead operated under a Memorandum of Understanding each of his two years at UK. Gillispie was making approximately $2.6 million in total compensation this season. As Calipari traveled to Lexington's Bluegrass Airport late Tuesday evening a throng of adoring Big Blue fans, a testament to the excitement created by hiring one of college basketball's most successful head coaches. After two days of holding their collective breath UK fans were finally able to exhale.UK is expected to officially introduce Calipari at a 9:30 a.m. news conference on Wednesday at the Joe Craft Center, the school's sparking practice facility attached to the back of venerable Memorial Coliseum. The proceedings could have a much different feel than the two years ago when Gillispie was similarly introduced, as fans have jammed message boards and talk radio shows in support of Calipari since the school's administration decided to part ways with Gillispie last Friday.Calipari brings an immediate 'name' back to the program, a coach who has a personality similar to former UK coach Rick Pitino in terms of his ability to handle the press and all the public responsibilities that come with the high-profile job. He built the Massachusetts program into a consistent winner in the early 1990's and breathed life into a moribund Memphis upon returning from a brief stop in the National Basketball Association. There is no questioning Calipari's credentials. He has a 445-140 record in 17 years as a collegiate head coach, good for a .761 winning percentage, and has been even better at Memphis. The Tigers have posted four consecutive 30-win seasons (they are 137-14 over that span) and have been a No. 1 or 2 seed in each of the past four NCAA Tournaments.
Calipari
Sources have confirmed to LEX 18 that John Calipari has accepted an offer from Kentucky to become the next men's basketball coach for the Wildcats.
An earlier report by WMC-TV in Memphis said that Calipari will take over at UK and will bring his coaching staff, as well as at least two current Memphis players, with him to Lexington.
WMC's Jarvis Greer said that a "reliable source" told him that the two Memphis players who will transfer to UK are Wesley Witherspoon and Robert Sallie.
There are reports that at least two members of Calipari's top-rated recruiting class for next season, who have verbally committed to Memphis but have not signed letters of intent, may also follow him to Kentucky. They are 6-10 forward DeMarcus Cousins, and point guard John Wall, who has not verbally committed to Memphis but is considered likely to sign with Calipari.
Meanwhile, ESPN.com said in a story by Andy Katz posted late Monday afternoon that his sources say that the offer UK has made to Calipari is believed to be for eight years and around $35 million.
Does Anybody Else See A Pattern Here?
Adolph Rupp - Legendary coach. Took UK program to extraordinary heights. Definite Hall of Famer.
Joe B. Hall - Successful coach who won a title. Fans grew tired of his "grind it out" style. He quit and the fans weren't too upset about it.
Eddie Sutton - Drunk who drove the program into the ground.
Rick Pitino - Legendary coach. Took UK program to extraordinary heights. Definite Hall of Famer.
Tubby Smith - Successful coach who won a title. Fans grew tired of his "grind it out" style. He quit and the fans weren't too upset about it.
Billy Gillispie - Drunk who drove the program into the ground.

I've Waited A Couple Of Days, Now I'll Weigh In
"I'm on the phone Cutler. Respect me."
The Billy G era is over. The first question I have is this. Was he really on the phone when Alan Cutler was chasing him around the Craft Center? We will never know, but I'm saying it was a fake call. I don't blame Billy. If Alan Cutler was chasing me I don't know what I'd do.
Let it be known from the beginning that I was in the minority group of fans who wanted to give Billy G another year. I really think he was on the verge of putting some very good teams together, starting next season. However, he just wouldn't act right. He wouldn't sign the contract, and if even half the stories of player abuse are true, then he had to go. I had no clue the level of abuse he was dishing out to the players. If I had known that, I wouldn't have been in support of keeping him. I DO NOT think he forgot how to coach all of a sudden, though. It's obvious now that he just lost the team. Reputable writers who are close to the program have said that there was going to be a mass exodus if Billy had been retained. I mean like 6-9 players were rumored to be strongly considering transfer. That's ridiculous. He had to go. National media types are killing us for only giving him 2 years. I hate to agree with a Florida guy, but their A.D. Jeremy Foley fired Ron Zook from football after 3 seasons I think. His explanation was simple. Why put it off if you can clearly see it's going to happen soon anyway. That's worked out pretty good for Florida football.
Now on to the candidates. My first choice (who I want, not who I think we'll get) will probably bug some people. I want Rick back. I know it ain't happenin, but that's who I want. No Cat fans will admit it, but I will. Be realistic. I bet the poll at the top would easily be won by Billy Donovan or John Calipari if it was a poll for "who do you want to coach UK". Think about why you want one of those guys. I'll tell you why. Because they remind us of Rick. Like him or not, Rick was the perfect fit for UK. He needed us. We needed him. Match made in heaven. We are jealous of what he's doing at the Ville and we want someone just like him because we think that's the only way we can keep up. Just my opinion.
I also might be the only one who won't lose it if we end up with Tom Izzo. Izzo shouldn't be anybody's back up plan. He is a top notch coach. He may not run and gun, but he's been to multiple Final Fours and has a title in his resume. In fact, he has a resume that would make everybody's favorite, Calipari, jealous. The fans don't want him because he reminds them of Tubby. Let's be real here. Are we really in a position to be picky about style of play when we're talking about a winner like Tom Izzo. Michigan State is lucky to have such a fine coach, and the Cats would be lucky too. No matter what the fans think. We would win with Izzo. Name me 5 coaches who are active today that have a better resume than Tom Izzo. I haven't researched it, but I bet he would be considered a top 5 coach. At the very least he's in the top 8.
Would Travis Ford be a good fit? I think he's a good coach. He's kind of like Billy G in that he hasn't been anywhere long enough to see exactly how good he can be long term. He's also like Billy G in the fact that he's a prick. However, I think he's a prick who understands the UK job and would do everything necessary to be successful. The only problem I have with Ford is the perception nationally that we had to "settle" for Ford. Make no mistake, we would be "settling" if we hired Travis. I think if it comes to that, in the long run, we will be happy. Travis plays an exciting style that the fans would love, and we know he bleeds blue. I would love to have a guy in charge who truly feels it when we lose. I want the players to be so passionate that it hurts their hearts when they lose. If it affects the coach that way, there's a better chance it'll do the same to the players. Saying that, there is nobody who would be more passionate about the job than John Pelphrey. I'm concerned about John after the season Arkansas just had, but I wouldn't go jumping off a cliff if we hired him either. I was actually in favor of hiring Pelphrey when Billy G got the job. My first choices were Donovan and Calipari, but John was right up there. I know one thing in hindsight. I would rather have suffered through these last 2 years with an Unforgettable running the show. There's just something about Pelphrey that I like. He's no longer near the top of my list, but I know in my heart I would be very excited if he got the job.
Some other candidates have been mentioned as well. Sean Miller is a guy at Xavier that I don't know much about. I know Xavier is good, and he's a respected coach. However, I don't know enough to give a very good opinion, so I won't. Jamie Dixon has been mentioned as well. His teams at Pitt are tough as nails, and I like that. Physical, don't back down, we're gonna hit you in the mouth and see how you respond kind of teams. I would be happy if we got Dixon, but he's not near the top of my list. Another guy who's name is gaining some steam is Mike Anderson of Missouri. 40 minutes of hell. Now that is a guy who would bring a style that the fans would love. He might be my favorite candidate outside of the Donovan, Pitino, Calipari trio. I don't get the feeling he is anywhere near the top of the list for Mitch though, so it probably won't get down to him. Now that I think about it, for some reason I left Anderson out of the poll at the top of the page. I had too many names going through my head.
Who do you think will be the next coach? Vote in the poll and let us know.
First Fully Animated Release From Deh Beh Films. Written and Directed By Jeremy Vinson.
Gay Copland - Two cops - one British and one Australian, and both very gay, discuss The Revolting Blog and some of it's faithful readers. Why in the world it struck me to put gay cops in my first career animated film is beyond me, but I hope you enjoy it. Some of the humor you may not get, and you'll think it's pretty dumb. However, for the ones who do get it, it will be very classic. Now, go on with the chlorophyll.
Some coaches I think UK is looking over...
Here is a short list that I have compiled that UK shouldn't skip over...
Ken McDonald - The Cats should be tired of ex-Hilltopper coaches taking positions in the SEC and beating them. This time I think UK should take the initiative and beat other SEC teams to the punch. They could now also do that with Dennis Felton...but McDonald has a .500 winning percentage in The Big Dance.

They could now also do that with Dennis Felton...but McDonald has a .500 winning percentage in The Big Dance.
Steve Sparks - Turned down by the Mustangs...so he is free and ready for an offer. Just one simple equation..........COACH STEVE SPARKS + ASSISTANT PATTY = LEGACY
Vince Lombardi - What a great motivator and coach! I know he's dead...but upon his hire, he will already bring more personality to the position than BCG.
Tony Hopper (sorry I didn't feel like searching the net for a pic) - Just think of the great chants of "HOPPER'S STOPPERS" ringing through Rupp Arena. And with a newly signed Converse contract, the triumphant return of the blue denim Converse shoes and uni's
Tom Vinson - In similar fashion to the great Vince McMahon, Tom Vinson moves out from behind the microphone to lead a one time great organization back to prosperity. Just think the halftime shows you could have at Rupp with Patrick Patterson giving Tom the finger and then "Patterson-driving" him onto the scorer's table.
Say Hello to your new Coach..
I have a pretty good source and he tells me that Travis Ford will be the next head basketball coach at UK... Travis is currently the frontrunner with Pitt's Dixon also in mind. Coach Donovan from Flordia, Coach Pitino at Louisville, Coach Calipari at Memphis, and Coach Wright from Villanova have all let UK know they have no desire to be the next head coach at UK. Travis has been contacted and was the candidate Coach Pitino selected as best fit for the job. Both Ford and Dixon will be in Detroit next weekend for the Annual Coach's Convention (or Dixon will be there to coach). Nothing will be decided though until after PITT is out of the NCAA Tournament. Announcement could be expected as early as Monday afternoon depending on game results. I say bring the UK boy back.. Also I just saw where Izzo said he wasn't interested as well..
THE NEW COACHING STAFF FOR UK..
Reggie Warford
Wow Steve Sparks did not get the job as the new coach of the Mustangs. Reggie Warford did. I don't know a lot about the guy. I know he was a good go guard out of drakesboro in the early 70's and he played for the cats. So that's a plus and from what I have read he has a lot of experience. He has two son's that are good ballers. Hre is some stuff I found on him. Mr. Warford’s lengthy college coaching career consists of: Iowa State (1976-1980), the University of Pittsburgh (1980-1987), Robert Morris University, Long Beach State (1997-2002) and the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Assocation (2005 and 2008). He also coached professionally with the Harlem Globetrotters competitive team. His coaching services are also offered in a video on demand and streaming formats by Protege Sports, Inc. (www.protegesportsinc.com), where he is part of a coaching staff that includes NBA superstar Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. In his professional career, Mr. Warford has served as a drug and alcohol counselor, family therapist, training presenter for life skills for schools and businesses. He is also a licensed private investigator that has worked cases from domestic abuse to homicide with his company R&D Security, Inc.
Do I need to even say BIG EAST dominance?
Is everybody gonna say no?
Billy Donovan, Jay Wright and John Calipari have all said NO NO NO to the UK coaching job.. I think MB should have been fired as well as BG.. Who fires a coach without having another one lined up... It seems no top notch coaches want the job... WHO is it gonna be.. I say Travis Ford..
New Coach
This did not come from my source. But the new rumor is that uk went to the far east to find the new coach. This is a picture I found of him. He is from China. His name is WINSOM SOON.
UL rolls into the Elite 8
Probally one of the best games UL has played all year, I was suprised to see how we dismatled Arizona. This doesn't mean we can't lose in the next round but UL is playing really good basketball right now...
THE BILLY GILLISIPIE ERA IS OVER.
Its official.. Both WHAS11 out of Louisville and Channel 4 out of Lexington has confirmed it, BCG is out.. Seems like the Deh Beh's source was Dr Todd himself.. SO who is gonna be the next UK coach?
Source
Well The Deh has a source and a damn good one. I received a phone call today at about 2pm from someone who told me Billy G was gone. I said B.S.. They told me after the game he told the team he would not return. I hope my source is wrong because I would like to give him one more year. And I have heard the rumors about Donovan coming in as our next coach and he has no buy out until April first. But my source says he has a buy out of 4 million. But they said they could be wrong on that one. So take it for whats its worth. Chad's #1 fan the DEH
I think Louisville might be going home after Friday.
I will be the first to say this, I think UL will lose to Arizona.. I just don't think we have an answer for Chase Budinger or Jordan Hill, both are potential lottery picks.. Arizona has been playing great here lately too.. I'm worried but I will still be cheering for Da Cards..
Cats show heart but in the end run out of time against ND.
The Greatest Wildcat of All-Time.
I think it was a month or so ago the V posted that he thought Meeks was the greatest wildcat ever. So my question is what is your top five greatest UK players of all time?
1.Mashburn
2.Issel
3.Riley
4.Masters
5.Meeks
4.
BG gets canned..?
Several Media outlets are reporting the UK's BG has been fired and after the NIT he is gone.. ESPN's Pat Forde on Outside the Lines reported the BG was gone along with Tim Brando, Im not sure if this is true or not.. Anyone read or seen any info on this?
If You Don't Think I Can Win The Blog Bracket Challenge, Blake Phillips Will Shoot You!!!!!! Better Start Believing.
The first weekend of the tournament ended with the "Blog Bracketologist" JV in the lead. Joel Huff and team Winner Winner Chicken Dinner are in second, followed by the Deh Beh and jellybeansbilly. Sizzler and the Bremen Wookies are ahead of the lowly Dr. Dusto to bring up the rear of the field. On a side note, I entered a challenge for Catspause.com members and I am in second place in a challenge with over 200 entrants. Actually, I'm in an 8 way tie for second, but being in the top 10 in a group that big is exciting. Some dude is in first all by himself. He is a true "bracketologist". Good luck tonight to the Cats. They have the entire team on suicide watch because they play in the SEC. Apparently Mark Krebs got on the Revolting Blog and read some of Maholli's posts and told the team about them. They had no idea how bad they sucked until Maholli and Krebs ruined it. Patterson said if he was projected top 10 in the CBA draft he was gone. Meeks has been in contact with Pogue Chrysler about a possible endorsement deal if he can't get accepted to a Big East school to finish his degree. He told Pogue about his left handed jumper. They were said to be impressed. It's down to him and JC Ice. Good luck to the Cards next weekend.
Cats will win tonight..
Even though times are tough at UK I have a feeling that UK will roll over Creighton tonight.
Sweet 16 Breakdown by Conference.

T-Will leads the way with 24 points and 15 rebounds, UL advances to the Sweet Sixteen for the secound straight year.. Earl Clark chipped in with 12 points and 12 rebounds, as did Samardo Samuels with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks.. Next for the Cards is Arizona. GO CARDS.. I'm sure all the blog followers are cheering for the Cards...
NCAA Day 3: Deh Is Brought Down To Earth
When asked to comment on Deh Beh's chances in the bracket challenge, Chad and Leanne Walker didn't have much to say. Deh will try to spin this into Chad saying Deh is #1. You can read it however you want. My sister won't be proud that this picture made the blog.
Day 3 of the tournament saw me overtake the Deh Beh at the top of the standings, although I don't figure I'll stay there long. I'm not that confident in my bracket this year. Not only did Deh lose the top spot, he fell all the way to third. Coming in at 2nd is everybody's favorite participator, Winner Winner Chicken Dinner Heh. There were some exciting games yesterday, with Duke barely getting by Texas, LSU kind of scaring North Carolina, and of course the Western/Gonzaga classic. It hurt me to see Gonzaga win on such an easy shot after such a battle of a game. I mean, Kendall Smith could have put on a Zags uniform and scored on the last play. However, I'm not gonna talk about the last drive anymore. What a tip in by Pettigrew to tie the game. Clutch plays throughout by both teams. Man, what I would give to have AJ Slaughter or Mendez-Valdez on the Cats. Just giving the Cats that one little Mexican could make all the difference in the world. Speaking of Mendez-Valdez, Jordan likes him. This is significant because she has watched many ballgames with me over the few years we've been together, but she's never really got involved in one like last night. She loved watching that "little mexican guy" run around. She said, "he runs around like he don't know where he's going, then he always does something good". Pretty good evaluation if you ask me. I think the girl is slowly becoming a basketball fan. I fell asleep a couple of weeks ago during the Morehead State/Austin Peay OVC tournament game, and Jordan watched the last 20 minutes when she didn't even have to. You guessed it, she liked that "pony tail" guy for Morehead. Hopefully today's NCAA action will be just as exciting. I know the WKU die hards are still hurting today. It sucks to lose a tournament game on a buzzer beater. At least the Gonzaga shot won't still be driven down your throats 17 years later. I'm betting they won't make commercials about it. Give it a rest Laettner. I do think that commercial is funny though.
Just A Quick Question
Why didn't "The Git" enter the bracket challenge. I thought when the challenge was announced that he would be one of the first to enter and it just hit me that he's not participating, which makes him the opposite of Joel Huff. I can make an educated guess based on the standings in the bracket challenge: he's still scared of the Deh Beh. He didn't want to continue the rivalry. Maybe he just didn't want to be in another movie after the gruesome death he had to act out in Math Camp Massacre. The mention of that movie makes me think of another question. Where's Grant Sharp. Probably too busy answering questions for Access Hollywood, Oprah, interviews with magazines, etc.
NCAA Day 2: More Deh Dominance
At this rate, the Deh Beh is gonna win the challenge and earn a role in his own movie. Somebody overtake this Beh so that he doesn't win something he could have anytime he wants it.
Day 2 of the tournament saw a few more upsets. It saw one of my final 4 picks lose to Cleveland State. So you won't be seeing me in the next Deh Beh Films production unless the Beh thinks I am worthy. I was a co-star in some of his earliest works, so I've got a chance. At this point I am in second place in the bracket challenge, tied with the Bremen Wookies and Winner Winner Chicken Dinner. Jellybeansbilly is next, followed by Sizzler and Dr. Dusto bringing up the rear. I fully expect the owner of team jellybeansbilly (Spilla) to trade places with Sizzler and Muddy because the rear is where he's always liked it. WKU plays the Zags today. I hope it's a game I miss in my bracket, because I picked the Zags. It will start to get interesting today in the challenge and we will see who really knows what they are doing. It won't be me. Damn Wake Forest. As the CEO of the Revolting Blog I would like to personally thank Joel Huff for PARTICIPATING in the bracket challenge. He IS PARTICIPATING as leader of team WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER. Without Joel's PARTICIPATION the challenge just wouldn't be the same. Have fun watching today's games.
Revolting Blog Bracket Challenge Update: Day 1
Deh Beh is leading the Revolting Blog Bracket Challenge after day 1 of the NCAA tournament. Of the 16 games played on Thursday, the amazing Deh Beh correctly predicted 15. Hence the name Super Scott. We have a 3-way tie for second place at the moment between Sizzler, Tom, and myself. Folks, after day 1 of the tournament it looks as if the bloggers are the experts. Of course, that yellow coward Maholli did not join the challenge. Big day tomorrow as Tom once again broadcasts from courtside at Rupp Arena as his Grayson County Cougars try to advance to the state semifinals, and of course day 2 of the NCAA's. Congrats to Sizzler, Tom, Muddy, and all other WKU grads as the Tops whipped Illinois tonight in first round action. They will face Gonzaga Saturday.
Revolting Blog Bracket Challenge Participants: Deh Beh, Sizzler, Tom, JV, Spilla, Villain Heh, and Muddyfoot.

WOW
Earlier tonight, one of my colleagues told me that Arizona was hot on the trail of Rick Pitino. UA school officials thought he would be the perfect choice to replace outgoing legend Lute Olson--the same man, of course, who stopped Pitino from winning back-to-back NCAA titles in 1997.
Arizona was prepared to pay $2 million or more for Pitino to move to the desert.
However, in pursuit of details on that story, I stumbled across this stunner: Pitino could very well be on his way back to UK!
Earlier tonight, Pitino hosted two of Kentucky's biggest boosters. I won't divulge the names of those who attended, but I will tell you that one is huge in the banking business, the other in coal.
According to multiple sources, the boosters traveled to Louisville to persuade Pitino to come back to Lexington and try to fix the mess created by Mitch Barnhardt and Billy Gillispie.
Initially, Pitino was pushing Travis Ford for the job, but the boosters said no. They were adamant about wanting Pitino, and only Pitino. So much so, that they said he could have anything he wanted. "Name your price" was a frequent response from the boosters.
Now, don't get too excited just yet. Pitino did not accept the offer, but he didn't turn it down either. After first being reluctant to even listen to any offers, Pitino gave the boosters the impression that he would seriously consider it before ending the meeting.
And if it was up to Pitino's staff at Louisville, which includes Steve Masiello, Walter McCarty, and Richard Pitino (all with ties to Lexington), he would have said yes during the meeting. Word is that Pitino's assistants are really pushing for him to take the job.
And why wouldn't they? Besides going back to the place were Pitino reached the pinnacle of his career, it would also be much easier to win SEC titles every year as opposed to the jam-packed Big East. If the money is truly as good as I am hearing, it would be a no-brainer for Pitino to go back to UK.
I seriously doubt anything official will come out until after the NCAA Tournament. But anybody remember when Roy Williams was grilled by Bonnie Bernstein about leaving Kansas for North Carolina after losing the NCAA title game to Syracuse in 2003?
Could we witness a similar scene this year in Detroit? UK fans can only hope!
UK gets 4 seed in NIT..
Well it looks like UK might be going out first round in the NIT vs UNLV.. It seems that UK got the worse seed out of all the SEC teams in the NIT.. Hopefully the Cats can make some noise and win the NIT but I have a feeling they might be going out first round..
The Cards the Number 1 overall seed in the Dance.
The Cards got the number one overall seed in the Dance and the Big East made history with 3 number 1 seeds.. GO CARDS.. Even though I'm worried about Ohio State in the 2nd round as well as a few other teams in the bracket, I still will be cheering for the Cards..

CARDS win Big East Championship.
GO CARDS... UL earns 1 seed and wins first Big East Championship.. Don't worry UK fans atleast 2 teams from KY are going to the dance.. How does it feel to be the 3rd best team in the state?
Not so fast, Meeks and Patterson both say they aren't sure about coming back next season.
It seems one of our bloggers jumped the gun earlier in the week and reported that UK's Patterson was coming back to UK next season. Well I guess I better set the record straight, even though it doesn't matter if he does. After the loss to LSU Patterson said " I don't know if I'm going to come back or go the the NBA," a day after saying that his mind set was to return for his junior season. Patterson said again that he will consider his options after the season. Also, Meeks said after last week's regular-season finale at Florida that he intends to return for his senior season.. BUT when he was asked yesterday if he expected to be back, he wasn't sure.. IMHO both players are gone, its time to jump off the sinking ship.. UK FANS THE PAST IS THE PAST AND UK HAS FALLEN FROM GLORY...CAN SOMEONE SAY LITTLE BROTHER
Cats fall and earn a ticket to the NIT..
I won't say I told you guys so but I did.. Once considered a elite program the University of Kentucky has fallen to a mid major level program and its only gonna get worse.. The SEC was a joke this year, the SEC has a lower RPI than any of the big six conferences since the ratings began 16 years ago. Even worse 9 of UK's wins came against teams that had an RPI of 200 hundred or worse, and yes I said 200.. What a joke.. Good luck little brother in the NIT..

SEC Tournament: Patterson says fans forget UK coach is human
By LARRY VAUGHT larry@amnews.com
TAMPA — Patrick Patterson says some people, including Kentucky fans, might have the wrong perception of UK coach Billy Gillispie.
“He is a human being. People outside this (UK basketball) family sometimes think that coach Gillispie is here to run Kentucky and he is a demon and blah, blah, blah,” said Patterson, UK’s sophomore center. “I hear a bunch of stuff about him.
“But we know on this team that he is a human being. He loves basketball and coaching. That is what he is here to do.”
Still, many UK fans are wondering if Gillispie has been too hard on the Cats and that’s why the team has slipped to a 19-12 overall mark and 8-8 Southeastern Conference record going into Thursday’s SEC Tournament game with Mississippi.
“Everybody thinks he is too hard and says this or that about him. The list goes on and on. But that is definitely not true,” Patterson said.
“No one is thinking to get this over with or is ready for the season to be over with. We all want to continue playing basketball. Everyone is just concentrating on Ole Miss and wants to play with great intensity. If we can do that and beat Ole Miss, then we can go to step two against LSU (on Friday).”
If Kentucky doesn’t win the SEC tourney, it will have its streak of 17 straight NCAA Tournament appearances snapped because after a 5-0 start in league play, the Cats have lost eight of their last 11 games.
“We know there is a lot of pressure on us, but we are not looking at that. We are looking to the future, and that’s Ole Miss,” said Patterson, UK’s second leading scorer (18.4 points per game) and top rebounder (9.2).
“We know that Kentucky wins basketball games and we were not able to do that as much as we thought we should have or as much as we wanted to. We didn’t finish the conference the way that we wanted to. But we know what lies ahead. If we can win this SEC Tournament, we can still go on.”
Desire to win
Patterson insisted that didn’t make it hard to focus on Ole Miss.
“We want to win this tourney. We probably want to win more than anybody in the SEC,” Patterson said. “To do that, we have to win four games. If you don’t win that first game, then there will not be a second game. So it is all or nothing from here on out.”
Patterson says Gillispie has not applied extra pressure to the team.
“He is still pretty much the same. He still has total confidence in us,” Patterson said. “He is ready for us to play. He is the same calm, collected guy. Everyone is just having fun, telling jokes and being a closer family We are enjoying each other’s company as it winds down and just don’t want it (the season) to end.”
Players did seem more relaxed and candid during the team’s open practice and media session Wednesday. It was the first time since media day in mid-October that every player on the team was available to the media.
“Everyone is more happy now. Everyone is not worried about anything else except winning. You can pretty much say our backs are against the wall,” Patterson said. “If we lose this game, we are most likely done.
“We have to have great intensity, heart and passion to win. But everyone is just having fun and staying in a good mood. We block out all the outside stuff and worry about this team and nothing else.”
